    Thomas Martin

Thomas Martin is the main character of the Professor Spindlebrock book series. He was born and raised in Ohio along with his sister Sarah. She passed away as a teenager, in a tragic event that Thomas blamed himself for. Her death shaped and tinted his family life, and influenced his choices, temperament, and attitudes into his adult years.

As a boy, Thomas wanted to be a police officer like his father; but as he got older he realized that he lacked the confidence that law enforcement demands. Still feeling a draw to the field, he studied the forensic sciences. It was toward the end of that course of education that circumstances (or fate, or Providence) led him away from the field for a time, and into new discoveries.

It was during a book-hunting trip (he collected and sold them) that Thomas discovered the Little Blue Book of Traveling Spells. He thought it was a joke at first, a novelty item, a work of fiction. But he quickly discovered that not only was it real, but that he could perform magic himself.

In the first book of the series, Thomas has his eyes opened to a new facet of the world around him--a society of rather privacy-centric magicians woven into the world's cultures. He manages to connect himself to the author of his book, a Professor C.C. Spindlebrock, who is an influential figure in his sphere.

Spindlebrock is famously reclusive, and would normally balk at someone like Thomas presenting himself for any sort of help or attention. But it is immediately apparent to the professor that Thomas has a unique gift--Conexus. This magical ability to draw on the power between individuals and the things they create is of great interest to the professor.

Thomas is called upon to utilize his education in forensics, and his latent magical talent, to solve a mysterious series of abductions that have plagued the magical community. He discovers the worth of his character, talent, and even the value of his painful past, as he helps rescue a group of young college students. All the while, he is being pulled deeper and deeper into a fascinating world that challenges his understanding of pretty much everything.
