Did you read the spoiler alert at the top of this page? I hope so, because what follows will certainly spoil the mystery of the character if you haven't read the books yet. If that is the case, go and read them for yourself before digging in here!
Professor Cyrus Cardamom Spindlebrock was born in India to British parents, in the year 1819. It was discovered at an early age, that he possessed uncommon magical talents. His parents introduced him to a variety of magical traditions, both eastern and western in nature.
But fate was cruel, it seemed to him at the time, and Cyrus lost his mother to illness. He had invested his time into her healing, but in the end it wasn't enough, and after her death he succumbed to a depression and guilt which defined him. After her death, he plunged into the research of the unknown--spirits of those who have passed on, and the extension of life--with his whole soul. He found discovered more than many would think possible.
During this time, Cyrus happened to fall in the middle of a secretive love triangle, in which he was the supposed love-interest who actually served to protect the two real lovers from parents who forbade their connection. This all fell apart when, in his effort to conceal the couple, he accidentally trapped the young man in a magical anomaly known as a confluence.
This mistake crushed him, and he sought diligently for ways to correct it. Through his pursuits, Spindlebrock discovered the Rognvald Scroll, which he used to extend his own life to buy more time, becoming what some in the magical world call a Sempiternus; one who has eternal--or at least extended--life.
All Sempiternus hide the reality of their long lives. For Cyrus this was achieved by living a reclusive life, and assuming new identities under the premise of a master-apprentice relationship. In this way he passed through multiple identities, until finally re-assuming his original name many years after his birth, when all who knew him as a young man were gone.
Later in his long life, Cyrus worked his way into the most influential body in the magical world, the Preeminent Council. His hope for correcting the mistake of his youth was failing, and so he thought he might correct some of the injustices and inequities in the magical community. Here he was disappointed, as he found the controlling Council members unyielding and intractable.
Meeting Thomas and Olivia gave Cyrus new hope in his lifelong quest to correct the mistake of his youth. With their help, he achieved what he had begun to think impossible. Thus freed, he gave up his status as a Sempiternus, and began to help build up those around him.
